One person has been killed and four others were injured after a gas leak occurred in a plant owned by Catcher Technology, a company that supplies products to Apple. Hydrogen sulfide gas leaked at the factory during “routine work,” The Wall Street Journal said Friday. Catcher Technology builds metal casings and Dell is also one of its customers.
The leak was not related to the company’s production line, however, and did not involve raw materials, as was the case when an explosion occurred in a Foxconn factory that was building Apple’s iPad tablets.
Three of those injured are in serious condition, The Wall Street Journal said, and one is in intensive care. The Catcher Technology-owned factory reportedly received a “black rating” by a local environmental protection watch group — the lowest possible score a factory can receive.
The working conditions at Apple’s manufacturing partner’s facilities have been in the spotlight for the past year. A Fair Labor Association (FLA) investigation of Foxconn factories found that workers were often sticking around for “excessive overtime” and that there were health and safety risks. Apple recently agreed to share the costs of improving the conditions in Foxconn factories, however, and Apple CEO Tim Cook took time during a visit to China to examine the conditions himself.
