RAZR and RAZR MAXX Ice Cream Sandwich Updates Now Rolling Out

RAZR MAXX ICS
The wait is over for owners of the DROID RAZR and RAZR MAXX as the Ice Cream Sandwich update has finally arrived.
Despite the announcement of Jelly Bean this week, Ice Cream Sandwich is still chugging along as the latest update to hit many Android phones.  Just a little over two weeks ago we heard that the RAZRs would be getting the ice cream treat, and according to multiple reports that is indeed the case now.
Just head in to your Settings on your phone and there should be an over the air update awaiting you.  Once you have that done and out of the way, you can commence waiting for Jelly Bean.

Google Unveils Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

By Arjun Daadhicch on June 27, 2012

Android 4.1 Jelly Bean
Google just announced Android 4.1 Jelly Bean during its Google I/O developer conference in San Francisco. The company discussed its “Project Butter” which focused around the enhancements for VSync, Triple Buffering and Touch Responsiveness. The company improved on touch experiences and said that in Jelly Bean, the operating system will anticipate where your finger is ahead of when you touch the screen, which should improve the touch response. The company showed that Jelly Bean, as a result, has a much higher framerate.

UI Improvements

Google said Jelly Bean is the “fastest and smoothest” version of Android yet, but it also offers other improvements. If you move a widget to another homescreen, for example, it will move all of the icons out of the way so that it can fit. It will also “magically resize on its own” to fit on crowded homescreens. Widgets can be picked up and tossed off of the screen by moving it to the top of the display, too.

Keyboard and Voice Improvements

Google also improved text input in Jelly Bean. There’s an improved predictive keyboard with a new algorithm for guessing the next word you’re going to type before you start typing it. Crazy stuff. Voice Typing typically relies on a data connection, but in Jelly Bean Google shrunk the software so that it can fit on the device itself, which means you won’t need a connection to type with your voice. It will initially launch in U.S. English and other languages are coming soon.

Accessibility

Blind users will be able to use Android Jelly Bean through a combination of touch, gesture and voice input.

Camera

Jelly Bean’s new camera application allows users to quickly view photos that have already been snapped. Much like in Windows Phone, you can swipe to view a photo you just took right from the camera viewfinder. A filmstrip view makes it easier to scroll even faster through your image gallery. Photos can be deleted by a simple swipe up on the screen, too, and there’s an undo option to bring it back.

Android Beam

In Jelly Bean you can send a photo or video by tapping phones together. Or, you can pair and connect a phone with an NFC-enabled Bluetooth device by tapping it with your phone. That’s pretty amazing stuff!

Notifications

In Jelly Beans, notifications show more information and can be expanded or collapsed. This can be build into applications, too. If you have a missed call from someone, for example, you can pull down the notification bar and tap “call back.” If you leave the phone application from the call, you can go back to notifications and hang up. Gmail notifications also expand so that you can get a look at the messages in your inbox. A calendar notification might show a meeting at 11:30 and now you can quickly email everyone in the meeting right from the notification itself. You can also Like or Comment on a friend’s check-in from FourSquare right from the notification. Third-party applications, such as Tune-in Radio also allow you to favorite a song without opening the application.
Notifications “expand on their own,” Google said. They can also expand or collapse whenever you want with a two finger gesture. Google showed this feature off with a Pulse news application that expanded to show news headlines.

Search

Google redesigned search “from the ground up” in Jelly Bean. It has faster voice search, a new feature called Google Now and a new UI. If you ask “how much the earth weighs” it will show a card with answer. Same goes for when you ask “what’s the weather?” It’s very similar to how Siri works. If you ask “Who the prime minister of Japan is” it will provide the answer as well as an image of the person. This is amazing technology and reminds us very much of Apple’s Siri. “What is the definition of robot” revealed the definition on its own separate card, too.

Google Now

Your Android smartphone just got a whole lot smarter. Google Now is basically an all-knowing digital being that learns. It can tell help you with public transit, figures out your commute, can help you keep up with your favorite sports team, travel and appointments. For example, it actually knows your typical work commute. Since it knows, it’ll always help you find the fastest route by taking traffic factors into account. If there’s an accident, it’ll suggest an alternate route so you’ll get to your destination on time.

Google Introduces Liveness Check to Boost Face Unlock Security in Jelly Bean

Face Unlock in Ice Cream Sandwich is a neat trick, but it isn’t the safest of security measures. Immediately after ICS hit, users found that simply using a still photograph would easily trick the OS into unlocking. In Jelly Bean, Google has an answer.
To nullify clever individuals from tricking the feature, Google has added a new “liveness check,” which requires the owner to blink before unlock can be verified. If the person does not blink, the device will display a failure screen and ask for a pin or pattern unlock that was set up during face unlock.

HTC teases something 'Incredible' for the US in July, we think a 4G LTE Droid might fit the bill

HTC Droid Incredible 4G LTE
HTC has been leaving Verizon subscribers hanging on just when they would get the Droid Incredible 4G LTE ever since we saw it in New Orleans last month. The company just dropped a not-so-subtle hint that the wait is about to come to an end -- a Twitter update from HTC's US branch is promising some "special fun" coming to us next week that will be "incredible," which we're pretty sure doesn't involve refurb sales of the 2010 original. While the clue is still a bit cryptic, it lines up with internal documents pointing to aJuly 5th release. We'd advise against partying too hard on Independence Day if you want to line up early for Big Red's adaptation of the HTC One line.

Adobe confirms it won't support Flash on Android 4.1, stops new Flash installs from Google Play on August 15th

Adobe Flash Platform
Adobe was very public about dropping mobile Flash last fall. In case that wasn't clear enough, the developer just drew a line in the sand: Android 4.1 doesn't, and won't ever, get certification for Flash. The company is stopping short of saying that Flash won't run, but it's evident that Adobe won't help you if the web browser plugin doesn't install (or breaks in spectacular fashion) on that Nexus 7. Just to underscore the point, the firm is also halting new installations of Flash from Google Play as of August 15th. Security updates and other vital patches will continue on for existing users. Any fresh downloads after that fateful day, however, will have to come from Adobe's mausoleum for old versions. The company had already said that HTML5 was the way forward on phones and tablets -- now we know just how quickly it's backing up that claim.

Nintendo reveals new Wii U Pro Controller

Nintendo seems to be following the policy of "the early bird gets the worm". The company kicked off E3 2012 with early glimpses of the Wii U hardware, presented by its live online-video series, by Nintendo President Satoru Iwata. The biggest revelation in these videos was the device which Iwata referred to as the "Wii U Pro Controller".

Will the anticipated launch titles for the Wii U make extensive use of the Pro controller? And will a white option be available? The answer to these questions and more will probably be addressed at the E3 Expo, when Nintendo holds its press conference on Tuesday at 0900 hours PST (Pacific Standard Time).
