Week in review: iPad 3 and more

This week belonged to the iPad. It started off with reports suggesting Apple could be in trouble over the 'iPad' trademark in China. It seems Apple bought rights to the name 'iPad' from a company but the courts have called the legality of the sale in question. Apple could face a fine, or in the worst case scenario, be forced to sell its tablet under some other name.

iPad fans had more good news than bad. Reports emerged of Apple's plan to unveil the iPad 3 in the first week of March. With 15.43 million iPads sold last quarter and no credible competition in sight, the iPad 3 is all set to be another blockbuster. We give you the rundown of the 10 likely features in the iPad 3.

The week started with another date in the courts for Google, Facebook and other Internet companies. The companies are facing criminal and civil action in two different lawsuits. Read 10 facts about Google and Facebook's legal troubles to get up to date with all the happenings in that story.

The week didn't get any better for Facebook with the controversy surrounding pictures that remain accessible long after deletion. With over 250 million photos uploaded to Facebook every day, that's a lot of embarrassing photos sticking around even when you thought they were gone! Read this and other stats from Facebook's IPO documents.

Google made waves (no puns intended!) with news of two exciting new products doing the rounds. It looks set to launch a cloud storage offering of its own called Google Drive. Google Drive is expected to take on Dropbox, Apple's iCloud and Microsoft SkyDrive amongst other players in this space. Stories also emerged that Google is working on an unnamed 'entertainment device' and make a real entry into the consumer electronics space.

A product that did launch this week in the US for real was Nikon D800, The 36 Megapixel Monster. Watch out for the full review when the unit launches in India.

And finally, just as the week was drawing to a close, news emerged about Amazon's FDI proposal getting Indian Government's approval. Stay tuned next week for full analysis of this development.

Facebook, Saavn ready to tango

According to reports emerging from Techcrunch, Indian start up 'Saavn' has been approached by Facebook for a joint collaboration towards greater distribution of music. India is one of Facebook's fastest-growing markets and a key focus area for the company, as evident from its IPO documents.

Saavn (or South Asian Audio Video Network) is an ad-supported digital music service for all kinds of Indian music made available on the Web, iOS and Android. It seems that Saavn has already helped Facebook tap into the large Indian market - ever since it's launch as a Facebook app a month ago, its user base increased from 35,000 to 785,000. Saavn allows users to find and share music from their Facebook Timeline page, Ticker and News Feed. The service is available all over the world, across 219 countries. Saavn's service is free to use online, while premium account holders, can download and play music offline.

Growth in India and other emerging markets like Brazil, is especially crucial to major internet services, given the restrictions in place in China.

10 new features of OS X Mountain Lion

10 new features of OS X Mountain Lion
Kunal Dua, Updated: February 16, 2012 22:16 IST

Apple just released a preview of the next version of its Desktop operating system, OS X Mountain Lion. Heavily inspired by iOS, Mountain Lion will aim to build on the success of its predecessor Mac OS X 10.7 Lion, which was downloaded over 1 million times within 24 hours of launch.

Here are the top 10 features showcased in OS X Mountain Lion preview.

1) Login to the cloud - With Mountain Lion, you can use your Apple ID to login to your Mac. Upon logging in, iCloud synchronises all your emails, documents, photos and contacts. And just the same way that iCloud works today, any changes made on the Mac are instantly reflected across all your devices - iPhone, iPad and iPod touch.

2) Messages - Messages is iMessage for the Mac and the existing iChat rolled into one. You can add chat via your AIM/ Google Talk/ Yahoo! account or send unlimited message to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users using iMessage - for free! It also features attachment support, delivery reports, read receipts etc.

3) Reminders - An all new Reminders app that syncs to your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch via iCloud.

4) Notes - A revamped Notes app that lets you add photos and other attachments to notes. The ability to pin notes to the Desktop is sure to come in handy. Notes is iCloud enabled as well.

5) Notification Center - Perhaps our favourite feature is an iOS style Notification Center. Mac OS X will be the first OS X release to have a built-in Notification Center that lets you stay on top of things. You can say goodbye to third-party solutions like Growl.

6) Share Sheets - Share Sheets are heavily inspired by the share button seen across the Web. A handy way of emailing links or posting videos to Youtube, we believe you will use this feature more often than you can probably think right now.

7) Twitter - Twitter integration is another feature that's straight from iOS. Operating System level support for Twitter accounts that lets you sign-in once and tweet from any application, will be very useful. Though Apple doesn't mention Address Book integration with Twitter yet, we expect it to show up eventually. (Editor's Note: After the huge outcry over iOS Address Book data sharing, we think Apple may have decided not to discuss the feature publically until it figures out how to handle it in OS X).

8) Game Center - iOS gamers would feel completely at home in the all new Game Center app for OS X - discover games, interact with friends, track scores etc.

9) Airplay - Airplay Mirroring is as easy as on iOS. With an Apple TV hooked up to a television set, Air Play lets you mirror your Mac on a HDTV or simply stream the movie playing on your Mac to the TV.

10) Gatekeeper - Gatekeeper is designed make your Mac more secure. It gives you the ability to run your Mac in 3 different modes. The first one lets you download and install any app you want, just like OS X Lion. The second lets you run apps from the Mac App Store and apps with a Developer ID. The third mode restricts your Mac to only apps from the Mac App Store.

While power users and developers will want to stick to the first mode, your Grandma would love the safety of having only Apple tried & tested apps run on her Mac.

iMessage comes to Mac as Messages, download now

iMessage is Apple's messaging service that lets iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch users message each other for free over a data connection (WiFi or cellular data). With the announcement of OS X Mountain Lion, Apple has brought iMessage to the Mac.

A beta release of Messages app from Mountain Lion is now available for download from Apple's website. The download will run on Macs running OS X Lion only. The program cannot be installed on Mac OS X Snow Leopard or older.

Messages is essentially iChat and iMessage for Mac combined in a brand-new interface. All the iChat functionality - AIM, Google Talk, Yahoo! and Bonjour chat - is still there, though the iChat application itself is replaced by Messages.

You can download the Messages beta from Apple's website. Usual caution associated with beta software is advised.

Apple slashes iAd pricing

Apple's slashing the amount it charges advertisers to run a campaign on its iAd mobile ad system once again, according to AdAge. This is certainly irking advertisers and agencies in the process.

The new pricing comes after Apple appointed former Adobe executive Todd Teresi to lead its iAd unit in 2012.

Down from the previous $500,000 threshold, advertisers will now have to spend just $100,000 for Apple mobile campaigns running in iPhone and iPad apps. It's a hugely mind-boggling reduction from the initial starting price of $1 million in 2010, when Steve Jobs unveiled Apple's first ad product.

The demand to be the first brand to go into business with iAd was initially, very high. The Verge said it well - that as the novelty wore off, Apple seemed to realize that the million-dollar minimum far outstripped the realities of advertisers' mobile budgets.

In addition to the slashing in prices, Apple is increasing the amount it pays mobile app developers. App developers will now receive 70% of ad revenues from iAds running on their apps, rather than the 60% cut that they had before - an indication that Apple is understanding it has a problem with developer adoption, perhaps? The extra money will compensate for lower ad rates and will be an added plus for those wanting to build businesses on Apple devices.

Side by side, Apple has been losing its hold in the mobile-ad market, hurting the app developers' ability to make money from advertising. While Google took 24% of the $630 million market for mobile display ads in the U.S. last year, up from 19% in 2010, according to research firm IDC, Apple's third with a 15% hold on the market.
