New Photos Show Details of Alleged 'iPad Mini' Rear Shell

A number of photos of the rear shell of the "iPad mini", both alleged actual parts and physical mockups, have been leaking in recent weeks, but a Nowhereelse.fr points to anew set [Google translation] at Chinese site NetEase showing in fairly good detail both the interior and exterior of the shell. The part is alleged to be a legitimate rear shell leaked from an original equipment manufacturer (OEM) in Shenzhen, China. 


The pictures show a number of details of the rear shell, including the opening for Apple's smaller dock connector expected to debut on the iPhone 5 next week, a rear camera hole, and the interior lip where the display and front panel will be attached. The shell appears to be for a Wi-Fi model, as it lacks a cutout for a SIM card and an open section along the top edge for a plastic window covering where the cellular antennas would be. 


As with other recently-leaked photos, the rear shell shows relatively little tapering compared to the current full-size iPad, instead carrying a rounded, almost partial bullnose profile along the sides. 


While Apple is holding a media event next Wednesday, the company is said to be focusing on the new iPhone for this event and planning a separate media event for October to introduce the iPad mini.

Apple starts prepping Yerba Buena Center for September 12th iPhone 5 event

Thanks to reader Andrew Stern, we’ve got some photos that indicate Apple is already preparing San Francisco’s Yerba Buena Center for its September 12th iPhone 5 media event. While it appears that the exterior banners will be going up tomorrow (based on Cherry Pickers being prepped outside the front), Apple has already put up its logos inside of Yerba Buena. We have posted more photos after the break:

iPods likely to share the stage with iPhone 5 at next week’s Apple event

While the new iPhone will likely not share the stage with a smaller iPad at next week’s Apple event(the smaller iPad is rumored to be launching in October), a string of new iPods will likely be present. Details on the changes coming in these new iPods are currently scarce, but we believe that there will be at least two new/updated iPod lines and possibly a third.

All these new lines will come in multiple colors, one of the lines will come in two size capacities, and the other two lines will come in a single storage capacity.

With the current iPod nanos and iPod shuffles both available in multiple colors (and with the nano currently available in two capacities and the shuffle in one), we think it is likely that new iPod nanos and iPod shuffles are launching next week.

However, it is possible that there is a third line as well (that, too, comes in multiple colors). With the iPod touch currently available in two colors and three capacities (black/white, 8GB, 32GB, 64GB), we don’t believe the iPod touch is the third line that comes in multiple colors.

Additionally, we have yet to confirm whether or not a new iPod touch will launch next week or at a later date.

We’re not sure what the third line is (yet), but we speculate that it may have to do with a possibly upcoming Apple device in which case moldings have begun floating around for. We previouslynoted the emergence of evidence for a taller, small iPod form factor with a larger display and a home button.

Many have referred to this purported design as the new iPod nano. But with Apple investing so many resources into the current iPod nano with its small, clip-able design, perhaps this taller, iOS device-like mini iPod design is a new iPod line altogether.

Perhaps, like with the new MacBook Pro models, Apple will ship current-generation and next-generation iPod nano designs. Or, perhaps, this new design is named something else altogether. With the iPad mini incoming, perhaps an iPod mini would be nice to have around as well. Again, this last bit about what third possible third line may be is just speculation.

Apple Issues Invitations for Media Event on September 12

The Loop reports that Apple has just sent out invitations for a media event scheduled for next week Wednesday, September 12. The event will be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco and is scheduled to begin at 10:00 AM Pacific / 1:00 PM Eastern. The tagline on the invitation is simply "It's almost here." 


Apple is of course expected to introduce the next-generation iPhone and give a final preview of iOS 6 at the event. Apple's "iPad mini" is reportedly also nearing a launch, but sources have indicated that Apple is planning a second media event for October to introduce that product. Apple's iPod lineup is also rumored to be seeing an update at one of the two events, while rumored iMac updates and the launch of a 13-inch Retina MacBook Pro are likely to appear separately. 

There's clearly a "5" in the shadow of the invitation, suggesting that Apple's next iPhone will indeed be called the iPhone 5.

Retina Display Support Coming to Photoshop CS6 and Lightroom 4 in 'Coming Months' [Updated]

Adobe today provided a few more details on its plans for Retina display support on its software, noting that a Retina-compatible version of Photoshop CS6 will be arriving "this Fall". A Retina version of Lightroom 4 will also be delivered "as soon as the work is complete".

Supporting this new technology requires significant work by our product teams and we’re committed to provided a free update to all Photoshop CS6 customers this Fall and Lightroom 4 as soon as the work is complete. Please note that Creative Cloud members will receive Photoshop updates more frequently and receive this update in advance of updates for non-members.

Users of Photoshop Elements should not expect a Retina update in the immediate future, although that team is still looking into adding support for it. 

Adobe Photoshop was one of the high-profile applications highlighted by Apple at June's Worldwide Developers Conference as having Retina display support in the works. Adobe, Autodesk, and Blizzard were three major software companies Apple noted it had already been working with on Retina compatibility, but it is still taking some time for developers to make their applications fully compatible with the new ultra high-resolution display found on the Retina MacBook Pro. 

Update 1:36 PM: A second blog post notes that Retina support will be coming to many more software titles than just Photoshop and Lightroom.

We are currently evaluating the roadmap for when other products may support HiDPI displays, and we will announce those plans as they are finalized.

Photos of Partially Assembled Next-Generation iPhone Show Component Layout, Thickness Comparison

Last week, we shared photos of the leaked dock connector and headphone jack for the next-generation iPhone paired with a leaked rear shell for the device, demonstrating that the independently-obtained parts are indeed compatible and giving a good overview of what the bottom of the device will look like. 

Sohu now posts (via Nowhereelse.fr) a new set of photos of parts for the next iPhone, including a photo showing a number of components placed into their proper positions within the rear shell. The flex cable housing the external buttons, the SIM tray, and dock connector/headphone jack flex cable can all be seen in the photo. Much of the remainder of the interior of the device will be taken up by the battery and logic board, which would be installed on the left and right sides respectively. 


Parts repair firm iResQ published a set of photos with a similar theme earlier this week, installing the bare components into their proper positions in the rear shell. 

The photos from Sohu also show an assembled front panel for the next-generation iPhone placed onto this partially assembled rear shell, giving a good look at the overall appearance of the device. Photos of a similar assembly appeared a month ago, but these new photos offer a fresh perspective on the complete device, comparing it to the iPhone 4 and 3GS and giving a good look at the comparative thickness of the three devices. 


One final tidbit comes from iLab Factory, which posts a photo of the silver rear shell of the white next-generation iPhone but with black strips at the top and bottom for the antennas. All other photos of the rear shell from the white device seen to date have contained white strips.
